About

Well, I decided to finally put together a homepage for the Martinez family. I've designed websites for other people, so I figured it was about time to put one together for us.

Another reason for the homepage is that I'm exploring the current job market to see what's available.

I graduated from New Mexico State University in May 1997 with a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering with a minor in math.

I immediately went to work for Raytheon in Greenville, Texas, assigned to an R&D team that was designing a very large scale ASIC. In addition to being the only job where I actually used Calculus, it was an exciting opportunity to learn VHDL and develop tools using C, Visual Basic, and Matlab.

I was tasked with writing the programmable math processor that was the heart of the design as well as the software to program and test the entire ASIC.

I moved to Albuquerque in January 1999 to be closer to family and accepted a position at Honeywell Defense Avionics. I was assigned to be a Software Engineer for the C-17 Flat Panel Display project and designed the software for the Display test set using numerious interface cards including DIO, GPIB, 1553, Ethernet, and Digital and Analog Video interfaces.

In January 2000, at the end of the C-17 project, I was given the opportunity to design hardware at Essential Communications. Essential Communications specialized in cutting edge high speed networking products including HIPPI, GSN, and Infiniband. It was a small company of about 40 people and a handful of hardware and software engineers. Being a small company, everything moved very fast and my responsibilities included the entire lifecycle of products - from conception and schematic capture to prototype verification and validation. Essential certainly allowed me to grow as an engineer.

Essential was purchased by SBS Technologies in 2002. In addition to upgrading a HIPPI 32bit/33Mhz PCI card to 64bit/66Mhz and providing support for existing products, I helped expand the budding Infiniband product line to PCI, PMC, and PCI-X form factors.

In April 2004 my wife, a software engineer, was offered a job at Rockwell Collins and we decided to make the move to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I accepted a job as Senior Software Engineer with the ARC-210 Radio division. My tasks included upgrading a software datafill manager for new radios and adding additional features in embedded software for a Talon Remote Display Unit. I also performed Cost Account Manager responsibilities for several projects. These responsibilities included scheduling, budgeting, assessing and mitigating risk management, exploring lean measures, as well as monthly reporting of earned value.

While my time at Rockwell was rewarding and stimulating, I decided to pursue a Master's degree at Southern Evangelical Seminary (SES). In August of 2006, I resigned from Rockwell to be an external student. SES has a rich background in philosophy and logic which has complemented my technical training quite nicely.

Further, this allowed me time to enhance my technical skill set by learning various web programming languages and technologies. While teaching myself PHP, MySQL, Javascript, jQuery, and CSS, I discovered the power of the Drupal Content Management system. I was immediately impressed with its security, flexibility, and scalability.

In January 2008, we found out we were going to have our first child. I placed the Masters on the back burner, launched BookSaleList.com, and began to explore the possibility of starting a web design company.

Josiah David Martinez was born October 22nd of 2008 and I immediately discovered that it is a very difficult thing to attempt to start a business while taking care of an infant!

Since my wife is better suited to being a mother, I'm uploading my professional resume to see what's available in the job market. I'd certainly enjoy working as either an engineer or a web designer.

We'd like to move back to the Southwest since we have family in Farmington, New Mexico.

(I also miss having easy access to green chile and breakfast burritos.)
